McDonald’s and Obesity

McDonald’s and Obesity

A student film project takes aim at obesity in America, and the McDonald’s corporation specifically.

The Commercial

Using their own kitchen, a toy cash register, and a video camera, a group of students has created a commercial highlighting the dangers of a fast food diet. The commercial showcases a 28-year-old woman in good health, who begins eating at “McDonald’s” every day. She becomes overweight, then obese, and finally succumbs to a stroke on the kitchen floor.

While it’s packaged in a light-hearted way, the statistics in the “commercial” are real: 127 million Americans (and counting) are overweight. It also points out that obesity leads to a number of potentially fatal conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer.

The Pillow

It’s a student production from start to finish, and a great example of students getting involved in the fight against obesity and related illnesses. While the video is aimed squarely at McDonald’s (an easy target, perhaps), a majority of fast food restaurants in America use an unhealthy amount of fats and carbohydrates in their products.

It may be difficult not to laugh at a woman with a pillow stuffed under her shirt while writhing on the floor from an imaginary “stroke”. But the final message of the commercial is clearly a sobering one: “Both the people, and the McDonald’s of America, need to work to end obesity.” Consider it food for thought.

Dr Kal’s Addendum:
Poor Suzy!  I am never going to that McDonald’s.  This commercial was funny and filled with good information.  I wish all young Americans realized the dangers in consuming too much fast food.
